The Black Philanthropy Initiative in Middle Tennessee is a project driven by Kia Jarmon’s desire to amplify the ancestral history and stories of Black philanthropy, to develop capacity building resources for emerging philanthropists, and to advise foundations and organizations on the history of philanthropy and specifically how to support Black philanthropy.

This effort led Jarmon to co-found and serve as Co-Chair for Give Black, Give Back with Lisa Swift-Young, a collaboration with The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. Learn more at www.BlackGivingBack.com.

“You don’t have to give a million dollars or have your name on a building to be acknowledged as a philanthropist.” - Kia Jarmon

do you need a philanthropy advisor?

  • Do you want to better understand philanthropy as a way to move an effort and people forward instead of charity which is keeping people and the system in their existing condition?

  • Are you a leader of a charitable fund and need to better understand equity* in your planned giving?

  • Do you teach an advanced or university on nonprofit management or development and want to help your students understand the origins of the industry they are pursuing?

  • Are you a nonprofit development leader in an organization that needs data on the $11 Billion dollars of annual Black giving?

  • Are you a corporate HR or social responsibility leader looking to help employees strengthen their community impact?

If you said “yes” to any of these scenarios, you might consider having a philanthropy advisor. As a part of our time together a portion of your fee will go towards a philanthropic initiative that we choose together; if you do not have a fund, it will go into the Give Black, Give Back fund where the advisory board will designate the gift to a nonprofit for you.

*equity here is defined as understanding accurate history and harm and its impact to the work, and taking the proper care to ensure that harm is not continued.
